Innovative Repair Avoids Crane Costs & Downtime

4 February 2015

When a slip ring failure brought a halt to the output from a Neg Micon 92 turbine on Ness Point, Lowestoft, the operators Jacobs were looking for a rapid but effective repair that would bring the turbine back into production as soon as possibleThis type of failure usually requires a crane to enable the component to be removed from the generator and sent for repairs. The problem was that although a crane was available, the cost of hiring the crane alone was going to be in excess of £30K. There would then be a further cost of lost production while the generator was down and the repairs were being carried out. Was there a better alternative? Jacobs contacted Gerry Downey at Rewinds & J Windsor to explore the options and Gerry proposed removing the slip ring up tower. A team from RJW removed the slip ring and brought it to their facility in Liverpool where the engineering team were able to carry out the repair in two daysOnce repaired, it was returned and installed on the turbine in a single day, and the turbine was once again operational. This rapid repair saved the owners not only the reduced downtime of the turbine, but also avoided the significant cost of the crane hireIn fact, an identical repair has since been carried out in an NM80 at E.ONís High Volts wind farm.
